…an avid book reader.
So I tried to start a book club. But house renovations, pregnancy and subsequent newborn plus a lack of interest meant it didn’t really happen. Then just before I went back to work it all came together and suddenly ta-da I have a group with about 5 members and we’re already onto book 3.
Except when I say ‘we’ it isn’t really the whole picture. It’s more a case of they are on book 3 and I am coasting along for the ride. I really want to read the books but in the spare time I do have, other things become a priority. Now I do read, actually I read more now than ever in so many ways but it seems to be more articles and factual pieces. If I’m honest it isn’t helped that they are all regular readers, the other Mummy in the group is an English graduate so used to the classics etc. Whereas science geek me would be much more at home reading a textbook of statistics than the Jane Austen number we’ve got this month!
However, then I remembered a conversation with a colleague from several years ago. I spent a month in Singapore and a lovely lady who was a London expat took me under her wing and helped me make the most of expenses. One day over dinner she was telling me about her cousin who had 2 young children and really enjoyed going to her local book club but was struggling to fit in reading the books. Julie had plenty of time as someone with no partner, children etc and loved reading. So Julie used to read the books, then they would have a phone call once a month to catch-up on life and for Julie to tell her cousin all about the book. Then she could walk into her meetings, witter about the characters, have a lovely evening and avoid the month long panic of not managing to read the book.
So who wants to be my Julie?
